The first two weeks of a baby’s life are incredibly special, marked by delicate features, peaceful slumber, and adorable poses. Here, we delve into the art and intricacies of photographing newborns under 14 days old, celebrating the magic of this tender age.

The first two weeks post-birth are ideal for newborn photography. During this time, babies tend to sleep more soundly, curl up naturally into womb-like positions, and have smoother, blemish-free skin. Aim to schedule the session within the first 5-10 days to capture these fleeting moments before they begin to grow and change rapidly.

I create a Comfortable Environments & prioritise the comfort and safety of the newborn throughout the session. Keep the room warm (around 75-80°F) to mimic the cozy womb environment, and use soft, soothing music or white noise to help lull the baby into a peaceful sleep. I ensure that props and blankets are clean, hypoallergenic, and gentle on the baby’s delicate skin.

From curled-up poses reminiscent of their time in the womb to delicate hands and feet details, each pose captures a unique aspect of their early days. I always prioritise safety by using supportive props and having a spotter nearby for posing assistance.

Within my studio I control light & this can work wonders in newborn photography, casting a soft, flattering glow on your tiny subject. I position the baby creating a gentle, diffused illumination ensuring a flattering and natural-looking result.

While posed shots are undeniably adorable, within my studio I attempt to create the lifestyle look. I don’t overlook the beauty of candid moments. I capture the fleeting expressions, tiny yawns, and adorable stretches that make each newborn unique. These candid shots often evoke the raw emotion and tenderness of the early days, creating timeless memories for my families to cherish.

In addition to capturing overall shots, I focus on capturing the intricate details that make each newborn special. From tiny fingers and toes to wispy hair and delicate eyelashes, these close-up shots provide a glimpse into the exquisite beauty of infancy.

I include parents and siblings in the newborn session. It adds depth and emotion to the photographs, highlighting the bond and love within the family. I encourage natural interactions and tender moments, whether it’s a parent cradling the newborn or siblings planting gentle kisses on their tiny cheeks. These heartfelt moments create treasured memories that families will cherish for a lifetime.

In essence, photographing newborns under 14 days old is a delicate blend of artistry, patience, and tenderness. By prioritizing safety, comfort, and creativity, you can capture the fleeting beauty and innocence of these precious early days, creating timeless keepsakes that families will cherish for generations to come.
